Project
UI/UX and branding design challenge

Brief
To design a podcast streaming service app and branding, that provides compelling features for the experienced podcast listener, and a user interface that delivers a seamless and intuitive user experience, at the same time aesthetically on-trend and targeted to a younger audience interested in popular culture.

Research
Based on my research I needed to structure my design to include the following important features listeners wanted in a podcast app:

Main screen – Podcasts are to be consolidated into a more simple menu of options, stripping out features and descriptions, using minimal text and large imagery to showcase each podcast show.

Podcast and episode search – If the users came for a certain podcast or topic, they should be able to look for it. Moreover, they should be able to quickly and easily navigate among the episodes in a given podcast.

Media player – With the help of simple “play/pause,” “rewind” and “next episode” buttons, users can smoothly navigate the audio track and listen to the parts they need or like.

Downloading episodes – Generally, users aren’t able to listen to podcasts online all the time. The ability to download selected episodes and listen offline is a nice option.

Custom playlists – Users should be able to build playlists of podcast episodes from different podcasts. It helps them create a comfortable listening queue.

User profile – The user profile helps keep all of a user’s favourite podcasts in one place. Additionally, the information provided by users will help you create a more personalised experience.

Design Process

  • Design research. Comparative/competitive analysis and research user experiences (Youtube, online articles, blogs) with trending podcast apps.

  • Define the problem. Analyse the research and consolidate them in order to define the core problems and establish features, functions, and any other elements that will resolve the issues collected.

  • Wireframing. Sketch out ideas based on the research and design low-fi wireframes

  • UI design. Develop a UI strategy for the project that incorporates the functionality, colours, fonts and visual hierarchy based on the data received at the design research stage.

  • Design iteration. Once I’m happy with the draft iterate/reflect on my design before submitting the completed task.
